Mother City of West Texas

Listings in Colorado City, TX

Welcome to Colorado City, the Mitchell County seat on the Texas Colorado River and an Interstate 20 crossroads of West Texas.

Colorado City is a city in and the county seat of Mitchell County, in the rolling plains of West Texas. It sits along Interstate 20 roughly midway between Abilene and the Midland–Odessa metro area, and the Texas Colorado River flows through the county, giving the town its name. As one of the earliest settlements in the region, it has long carried the nickname "Mother City of West Texas." The community took shape in the early 1880s as a townsite on the Texas and Pacific Railway, quickly becoming a cattle shipping point for area ranchers. A speculative boom pushed the population toward 6,000 by the mid-1880s before a severe drought slowed growth, and the 1890 census counted about 2,500 residents. In the early 20th century the town stabilized as a ranching and agricultural trade center, with banks, a newspaper, and a courthouse anchoring the seat of Mitchell County. Interest in oil built through the 1910s and 1920s, and petroleum later became a mainstay of the local economy alongside ranching and, more recently, wind energy. Today Colorado City is a compact West Texas city of roughly 4,000 people. The economy is anchored by energy — oil and gas extraction and related services, plus growing wind generation — along with retail, construction, and public administration. The county courthouse and the town's historic downtown still reflect its railroad-era origins, and the city functions as the commercial and governmental hub of a sparsely populated county. Recreation and small-town life revolve around Lake Colorado City, a reservoir impounded in 1949 on Morgan Creek, and the adjoining Lake Colorado City State Park. The park offers fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and camping, giving residents and travelers a year-round outdoor draw at the edge of town. Interstate 20 places the city within convenient reach of Abilene to the east and the Permian Basin to the west.

City Guide

About Colorado City

Real Estate & Housing

Colorado City's housing stock is a mix of early-20th-century homes near the courthouse and downtown, mid-century ranch houses, and more recent single-family construction on the city's edges. As a small West Texas seat, the city's neighborhoods are modest in scale, with many homes on larger lots and a prevalence of owner-occupied, single-story residences typical of the region. Apartment options are limited but present, including a small number of multifamily communities near the I-20 corridor. The market is shaped more by local employment in energy, agriculture, and county government than by commuter demand, giving it a stable, small-town housing character rather than a fast-turnover suburban market.

Neighborhoods

Colorado City is small enough that it reads as a single cohesive community rather than a collection of sharply defined neighborhoods. The historic core around the Mitchell County Courthouse and the downtown commercial district contains many of the city's oldest homes, while residential streets fan outward toward the schools and the edges of town. Development along and near Interstate 20 includes motels, fuel stops, and services that cater to travelers and the energy workforce. For those who want more space, the surrounding countryside offers scattered acreage and rural homesites across Mitchell County, a short drive from town.

Lifestyle in Colorado City

Life in Colorado City moves at a deliberate West Texas pace. As the county seat, the town is the center of government, schools, and commerce for Mitchell County, so everyday errands, school events, and civic life are concentrated in town. Dining and shopping are modest but serviceable, with a mix of local cafes, chain restaurants, and retailers along the I-20 corridor. Community identity is tied to ranching and oil heritage, high school athletics, and the rhythms of the energy industry. The nearby state park and lake give residents an easy weekend outlet for fishing, boating, and camping without leaving the county.

Schools & Education

Public education in Colorado City is provided by the Colorado Independent School District (Colorado ISD), a small district of roughly 900 to 950 students serving pre-kindergarten through 12th grade across three campuses. The district's schools draw from the city and the surrounding Mitchell County area. For families, the compact district means short commutes to campus and close ties between the schools and community life, including high school athletics. Higher education and specialized training are available within driving distance at institutions in Abilene and elsewhere in West Texas.

Getting Around

Colorado City sits directly on Interstate 20, the east–west backbone of West Texas. The highway connects the city to Abilene to the east and to the Midland–Odessa metro area and the Permian Basin to the west, making the town a convenient stopover and a practical base for energy-industry commuters. State and farm-to-market roads radiate into Mitchell County's ranchlands. Rail freight remains part of the town's identity, reflecting its founding as a Texas and Pacific Railway townsite. Regional commercial air service is available through airports in Midland–Odessa and Abilene.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Colorado City, impounded on Morgan Creek in 1949, is the centerpiece of outdoor life in the area. Lake Colorado City State Park, managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, offers fishing, swimming, paddling, boating, waterskiing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing along its roughly 1,600-acre reservoir. In town, Fisher Park and Ruddick Park provide playgrounds, green space, and community recreation. The surrounding Mitchell County countryside offers hunting, ranchland scenery, and wide-open West Texas skies, while the county's second reservoir, Lake Champion, adds another angling and boating option nearby.
