Bosque County Town

Listings in Morgan, TX

Welcome to Morgan, a small Central Texas town in northern Bosque County at the junction of State Highway 174 and Farm Road 927, about forty miles northwest of Waco.

Morgan is a small city in northern Bosque County, in the rolling Cross Timbers country of Central Texas. It sits at the junction of State Highway 174 and Farm Road 927, seven miles northeast of Meridian, the county seat, and about forty miles northwest of Waco. The community began as Steele's Creek — or Steel Creek — named for the nearby stream, and grew as a nineteenth-century trading center at a crossing of intersecting rail lines. It incorporated as a city in 1890, and by the early 1900s it was a bustling small town of several hundred people. Like many rural Texas communities, Morgan declined as the railroad and farm economy changed: its population fell from more than 800 around 1910 to about 200 by 1970, and the town settled into its present quiet scale of roughly 450 residents. Today Morgan is a close-knit, largely residential town. The Morgan Independent School District anchors the community, serving prekindergarten through twelfth grade on a single campus, and the school is a central gathering point for the area. A handful of local businesses serve daily needs, while residents travel to Meridian, Clifton, or Waco for shopping and services. The surrounding countryside is a mix of farmland, pasture, and wooded creek bottoms. Lake Whitney, the large reservoir on the Brazos River, lies within a short drive, offering boating, fishing, and camping, and the Bosque River and Meridian State Park provide additional outdoor recreation. Morgan suits people seeking a slow, affordable rural pace in the heart of Central Texas, within commuting distance of the Waco area.

About Morgan

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Morgan is modest and inexpensive, consisting mostly of older single-family homes, with some manufactured homes and rural acreage at the town's edges. The town's long population decline left a supply of aging but affordable houses, and newer construction is rare. Buyers here typically seek a low-cost, small-town setting rather than suburban amenities. Surrounding Bosque County offers ranchland and farm parcels for those wanting more space.

Neighborhoods

Morgan is small enough that it has no distinct subdivisions; the town is organized around its single school campus, the State Highway 174 corridor, and a few residential streets. Homes are spread loosely through the community, and the surrounding countryside blends town and farm, with ranchland and creek-bottom pasture reaching to the edge of the city limits. Neighboring communities such as Kopperl, Walnut Springs, and Iredell share the same rural character, and the county seat of Meridian serves as the area's commercial anchor.

Lifestyle in Morgan

Life in Morgan is quiet and rooted in small-town and agricultural traditions. The school's events, local churches, and community gatherings form the social calendar, and residents value the unhurried pace of rural living. Hunting, fishing, and time outdoors are common pastimes across all seasons. For dining, shopping, and entertainment, residents drive to Meridian, Clifton, or Waco, while the town itself offers a low-key, neighborly atmosphere that appeals to those seeking simplicity.

Schools & Education

Morgan Independent School District serves the town and surrounding area with a single campus covering prekindergarten through twelfth grade, enrolling roughly 150 students. The small district offers individualized attention and is the heart of the community. Nearby districts serve surrounding towns, and higher education is available at McLennan Community College, Baylor University, and Texas State Technical College in Waco, about forty miles away.

Getting Around

Morgan sits at the junction of State Highway 174 and Farm Road 927 in northern Bosque County. Highway 174 connects the town to Meridian to the southwest and to Interstate 35 and the Waco area beyond, about forty miles away. Driving is essential, and regional air service is reached through Waco Regional Airport or the larger Dallas–Fort Worth airport to the north. The town's rail heritage remains visible in its history, though passenger service is long gone.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Whitney, the large reservoir on the Brazos River, lies within a short drive and offers boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Meridian State Park, south of the county seat, provides hiking, picnicking, and lake access, while the Bosque River and the surrounding Cross Timbers woodlands offer hunting and wildlife watching. Local school sports and community events round out recreation in this rural part of Central Texas.
