Central Texas Crossroads Town

Listings in Santa Anna, TX

Welcome to Santa Anna, a small Coleman County town in Central Texas where three U.S. highways meet amid ranch country and cotton-era history.

Santa Anna is a small town in east-central Coleman County in Central Texas, positioned where U.S. Route 67, U.S. Route 84, and U.S. Route 283 come together. With about 1,000 residents, it is a compact agricultural and ranching community roughly nine miles southeast of Coleman, the county seat, and about 21 miles west of Brownwood. The town sits in rolling hill country where ranching, farming, and small-town trade have long defined the local way of life. The community developed in the late nineteenth century as the open range was fenced and sold and cotton became the principal crop. Santa Anna grew into a regional trade center, operating as many as four cotton gins and serving as a major rail shipping point for livestock. Its early business district included drugstores, hotels, banks, and produce houses. The town incorporated in 1906, and Sealy Hospital was built in 1917 and later expanded with a nursing school, anchoring healthcare for the area for much of the twentieth century. Around 1930 the Texas Glass Company opened here, adding a manufacturing employer to the farm economy. Today Santa Anna remains a quiet, self-contained town serving the surrounding ranch country. The Santa Anna Mountains, a two-mile range rising just north of town to about 2,000 feet, give the community a distinctive backdrop and name. Its position at the junction of three federal highways makes it a natural waypoint for travelers crossing this part of West-Central Texas, while its school district, churches, and small businesses anchor community life. For residents, the appeal is the pace and character of a rural Texas town—open space, long horizons, and a strong sense of place—within driving distance of the larger regional centers of Brownwood and Abilene. Natural Springs Park offers a quiet local retreat, and Lake Brownwood provides fishing, boating, and camping within a short drive.

About Santa Anna

Real Estate & Housing

Santa Anna's housing is characteristic of a rural Texas town: older single-family homes in the established grid near the highway junction, along with ranch-style houses on larger lots at the town's edges and scattered acreage homes in the surrounding countryside. The stock skews toward modest, traditional construction from the mid-twentieth century and earlier, reflecting a stable, long-settled population. Buyers drawn to Santa Anna typically value space, quiet, and affordability over density, with ranchland and farm properties extending beyond the town limits.

Neighborhoods

Santa Anna is small enough that it functions as a single community rather than a collection of distinct neighborhoods. The older town center, laid out around the highway junction and the railroad, holds the historic commercial core and some of the oldest homes. Residential streets extend outward into mid-century blocks, and beyond the incorporated limits, ranch and farm properties spread across the surrounding Coleman County countryside, offering a rural living pattern tied closely to the land.

Lifestyle in Santa Anna

Daily life in Santa Anna is shaped by the rhythms of a rural Texas community. Churches, school events, and local gatherings form the social center, while ranching and agriculture remain part of the area's identity. Residents shop locally for essentials and travel to Coleman or Brownwood for broader retail and services. The town's location on three federal highways brings steady pass-through traffic and a self-reliant, neighborly culture typical of West-Central Texas small towns.

Schools & Education

Santa Anna Independent School District serves the town and the surrounding area. The district traces its roots to an early one-room school that expanded over time; Santa Anna was classified as a first-class high school by 1911. Today the district operates a close-knit K–12 system, with athletics and extracurricular programs central to community life. Families seeking additional options can look to school systems in nearby Coleman or Brownwood.

Getting Around

Three U.S. highways meet in the center of Santa Anna. U.S. Route 283 runs south to Brady, U.S. Route 67 heads west to Ballinger, and U.S. Routes 67 and 84 together lead east to Brownwood, with U.S. 84 and 283 running northwest to Coleman. This junction places the town along regional travel routes through West-Central Texas, roughly 21 miles from Brownwood and about nine miles from the county seat, giving residents straightforward highway access across the region.

Parks & Recreation

Outdoor recreation around Santa Anna draws on the surrounding hill country. The Santa Anna Mountains, a two-mile range just north of town, provide a prominent local landmark, while Natural Springs Park offers a quiet escape with its namesake springs. Within a short drive, Lake Brownwood offers fishing, boating, and camping, and the countryside around Coleman and Brownwood provides hunting, ranching, and open-space recreation typical of the region. Local parks and school facilities host community events throughout the year.
